Support Groups

You don't have to go through it alone. Support and Recovery Groups offer an opportunity for people in similar life circumstances to come together for Christ-centred support. Everyone is welcome; you don’t have to attend Lakeview Church in order to participate in the following groups:

“Adult Children of Dysfunction” is a term used to describe adults who have grown up in dysfunctional families. Dysfunction might be described as alcoholism, physical, sexual or emotional abuse, loss of a parent through death or divorce – simply put, dysfunction occurs when a child’s needs are not met in healthy ways.

The Adult Children of Dysfunction group is a closed, confidential group with a limited participation of 12 members that meets for 10 weeks.

Highlights of the program:

  • Healing the Shame – through abandonment and abuse we are left with a “sickness of the soul”. Learn to recognize shame and become empowered.
  • Creating Healthy Relationships – learn what constitutes a healthy relationship, the art of establishing boundaries, and communication without fear.
  • Forgiveness of Self – learn gentleness, having fun, being spontaneous, and letting go of harsh judgment of self.

Common characteristics of Adult Children of Dysfunction:

  • Experience depression (suppressed anger) and frequently withdraw from others.
  • Dependent personalities who are terrified of abandonment and stay in unhealthy relationships.
  • Have been shamed in childhood and in adulthood sometimes take over the power role (never to be shamed again) or become isolated and afraid of authority figures.
  • Are extremely loyal, feel loyalty is owed even in the face of evidence that it is undeserved.
  • Become “people pleasers”, always concerned with the needs of others and forever discounting themselves and their own needs.

Chronic Pain and/or Depression – A group for men and women of all ages to be a support to each other through life experiences, scriptural encouragement, and prayer. We walk together through the daily suffering of chronic pain and/or depression.

DivorceCare is a weekly seminar and support group for people who are separated or divorced. It’s a place where you can be around people who can relate to what you are feeling. It’s a place where you can hear valuable information about ways to heal from the hurt of divorce or separation.

GriefShare is a 13-week seminar and support group for people who are grieving the death of someone close to them. At GriefShare, you’ll learn valuable information about recovering from your grief and renewing your hope for the future.

Please be aware that these groups are not therapy groups. Our facilitators are trained in leading support groups, but do not function as counsellors or professionally qualified therapists.

For more information on any of the above support/recovery groups, please contact Elizabeth Nickel at the church.
